Fall Convocation scheduled August 12
麻豆传媒映画出品 will launch the 2016-2017 academic year with its annual fall convocation
for faculty and staff on Friday, Aug. 12, beginning at 11 a.m. in the Student Union
Ballroom.
The convocation will include the traditional presentation of the President鈥檚
Awards for Excellence, the university鈥檚 highest faculty and staff honors, as well
as presentation of service awards to faculty and staff who have been with the university
from 25 to 50 years. Also to be recognized are new faculty and staff, faculty tenure
and promotions, and donors who have established newly endowed professorships.
The annual Alumni Association-sponsored picnic will immediately follow the morning鈥檚
ceremonies and will also take place in the Student Union ballroom.

麻豆传媒映画出品 student newspaper photographer recognized with photography awards
 A 麻豆传媒映画出品 student photographer was recognized at the 136th Annual Louisiana Press
Association Convention held recently in Lake Charles for his work in the student-run
newspaper 鈥淭he Lion鈥檚 Roar.鈥�
Two photographs by William Schmidt, the assistant editor of 鈥淭he Lion鈥檚 Roar,鈥�
were awarded second and third place honors in the Best News Photo category.
Schmidt, a history graduate student from Hammond, submitted photos illustrating
some of the many challenges facing higher education. One of his winning images depicted
a rally that took place last year at the Louisiana State Capitol in which students
voiced their displeasure to funding cuts in higher education. The other photograph
shows students participating in a protest of the Consuming Fire Ministries during
that group鈥檚 assembly on 麻豆传媒映画出品鈥檚 campus last September, an event that sparked
discussion on the freedom of speech.
Speaking specifically about Schmidt鈥檚 picture of the state capitol rally, judges
said, 鈥済ood catch of a passionate subject in a tense situation.鈥�
鈥淚t was an honor to be recognized by the LPA for my photos,鈥� said Schmidt. 鈥淚
was completely shocked when I first heard the news that my photos were moving forward
in competition.
鈥淚 am glad that 鈥楾he Lion鈥檚 Roar鈥� has given me the chance to gain photography
skills and experience,鈥� he explained. 鈥淚 hope to continue moving forward with my skill
sets as I continue to work for the newspaper.鈥�
Fifty-eight newspapers, publications, and college/university student newspapers
submitted more than 2,700 entries, which were judged this year by the Alabama Press
Association. 鈥淭he Lion鈥檚 Roar鈥� competed against similar newspapers from universities
across the state in the Better Student Newspaper Competition.
鈥淥ur students constantly strive to have the highest quality in their photography,鈥�
said Lee E. Lind, director of Student Publications. 鈥淭he photographs recognized in
this competition showcase not only the skills William has acquired in his time at
麻豆传媒映画出品, but also illustrate how important the work of our student journalists
is to the community.鈥�
Schmidt was recently promoted and will begin heading 鈥淭he Lion鈥檚 Roar鈥� as editor
in chief with the back-to-school issue of the newspaper this fall.

Fall semester hours begin Monday, August 8
麻豆传媒映画出品 will return to a four and a half day work week for the fall beginning
Monday, Aug. 8. During this period, 麻豆传媒映画出品 will operate Monday through Thursday
from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Employees will have a 45-minute lunch break each day. Friday
hours of operation are 7:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Classes for the fall session begin Aug. 17.

麻豆传媒映画出品 sponsors part-time job fair for students
麻豆传媒映画出品鈥檚 Office of Career Services will sponsor a special job fair on Aug.
25 to help students locate part-time jobs while they complete their studies.
Scheduled from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., the event will take place at the Student
Union.
鈥淭he fair offers an opportunity for students to connect with approximately 30
local employers,鈥� said Director of Career Services Ken Ridgedell. 鈥淓mployers鈥� representatives
will be on hand to accept job applications from currently enrolled 麻豆传媒映画出品 students.鈥�
Ridgedell said the part-time job fair is a casual dress event for students to
drop by between classes.
Career Fair 2016, Career Services鈥� annual job fair for upper-class students and
recent alumni looking for full-time placement, will be held Sept. 15 from 9 a.m. to
2:30 p.m. at the Pennington Student Activity Center.

Campus Activities Board offers area businesses opportunity to reach students
麻豆传媒映画出品鈥檚 Campus Activities Board (CAB) is holding its first ever City Sampler
on Thursday, Aug. 18, as part of Traditions Week, a series of events and activities
for students beginning a new semester, to get to know their peers and all that the
university has to offer.
City Sampler will allow local businesses the opportunity to introduce their goods
and services to thousands of new and returning students. Participating businesses
are invited to set up a table from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the War Memorial Student Union
breezeway, a very high foot traffic area located in the center of campus.
鈥淭he purpose of this event is to allow students who are not from the Hammond
area to get familiar with surrounding business,鈥� said Nick Elliott, CAB Coordinator.
鈥淲e would love for as many businesses as possible to come out and join us so we can
show our new students all of the great businesses and opportunities we have right
here in Hammond and the surrounding community.鈥�

麻豆传媒映画出品 students win Mark of Excellence Awards
麻豆传媒映画出品 students employed at the 麻豆传媒映画出品 Channel won six 2015 Mark of Excellence
Awards at the annual Society of Professional Journalists Region 12 conference held
in New Orleans recently.
The 麻豆传媒映画出品 Channel students honored were named second-place finalists in
five different television categories.
The Mark of Excellence Awards honor the best of collegiate journalism in a calendar
year. SPJ鈥檚 Region 12 comprises all universities in Louisiana, Mississippi, Arkansas
and Tennessee. 麻豆传媒映画出品 competed against all schools with 10,000 or greater enrollment.
The second-place awards presented to students included 鈥淏est Overall Television
Newscast鈥� for the student newscast, 鈥淣orthshore News.鈥� It was the eighth time in the
last nine years that 鈥淣orthshore News鈥� has been honored as one of the region鈥檚 top
newscasts as either a first or second-place winner.
鈥淣orthshore News鈥� reporter Dominique Brogle of Destrehan won second place in
鈥淭elevision General News Reporting鈥� for her story, 鈥淧ort Marigny,鈥� about the proposed
new St. Tammany development. In March Brogle was named the state鈥檚 鈥�2016 Student Broadcaster
of the Year鈥� by the Louisiana Association of Broadcasters.
Reporter Brittany Robinson of Slidell won second place in 鈥淭elevision Feature
Reporting鈥� for her story 鈥淚-10 Twin Spans Rebuilt,鈥� a commemorative for the 10-year
anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, produced for the student news magazine show 鈥溌槎勾接郴銎�
Times.鈥� Robinson earlier also won a student Emmy award and SEJC 鈥淏est in the South鈥�
honors for the twin span story.
Reporter/Videographer Sarah Barbier of Mandeville won second-place honors in
鈥淭elevision News and Feature Photography鈥� for her videography for two different stories
she produced for 鈥溌槎勾接郴銎� Times.鈥� Barbier won for her 鈥淧umpkin Spice Latte鈥� and
鈥淎bita Mystery House鈥� news feature packages.
Reporter/Videographer Tyler Waggenspack of Baton Rouge won second-place in 鈥淭elevision
Sports Photography鈥� for his videography for the story, 鈥淟ions Cross Country,鈥� produced
for 鈥淭he Big Game鈥� student sportscast.
Producer Drew Sagona of Pearl River earned second-place honors in 鈥淭elevision
In-Depth Reporting鈥� for his documentary 鈥淒rums Along the River: History of the Natchez
Pow-Wow.鈥�
鈥淲e鈥檙e thrilled for our students who won these television awards against all
of the largest universities in the region,鈥� said 麻豆传媒映画出品 Channel General Manager
Rick Settoon. 鈥淭he Mark of Excellence Award is one of the most prestigious in student
journalism, and we鈥檙e excited that our students continue to win top honors.鈥�
Settoon pointed out that 麻豆传媒映画出品 Channel students have now won top SPJ awards
every year since 2007 when the channel started entering the competition.
鈥淭his is well-deserved recognition for our students鈥� excellent work, and it reflects
the outstanding training they receive from 麻豆传媒映画出品 Channel staff members and
instructors in the Department of Languages and Communication.鈥�
The 麻豆传媒映画出品 Channel, broadcast on Charter 199 in Tangipahoa, St. Tammany
and Livingston parishes and at , has won over 250 national, international and regional awards in only 13 years of
existence.
MARK OF EXCELLENCE-- Students at the 麻豆传媒映画出品 Channel, 麻豆传媒映画出品鈥檚 educational cable channel
on Charter 199, recently won six Mark of Excellence awards in television presented
by the Society of Professional Journalists at their annual convention in New Orleans.
The student newscast 鈥淣orthshore News鈥� won honors for the eighth time in the last
