鈥楲et鈥檚 Talk: Art鈥� spring series begins Feb. 15
The spring series 鈥淟et鈥檚 Talk: Art,鈥� sponsored jointly by 麻豆传媒映画出品鈥檚 Department
of Fine and Performing Arts, Hammond Regional Arts Center (HRAC), and Friends of Sims
Memorial Library, kicks off Wednesday, Feb. 15, at 5 p.m.
The first presentation will be held at the Contemporary Art Gallery on 麻豆传媒映画出品鈥檚
campus. Morgan Methvien, art history concentration student, will present 鈥淪iegfried
Bing and the Promotion of Japonisme.鈥�
鈥淧arisian German-French art dealer Siegfried Bing was responsible for the popularization
of Japanese-style aesthetics in modern art,鈥� said Sims Library Director Eric Johnson.
鈥淢organ Methvien will present little-known information about Bing, revealing his influence
on Art Nouveau and other specific art movements through the inclusion of Japanese
culture and the manner in which his ideas were spread across multiple countries.鈥�
Johnson said the following evening, Thursday, Feb. 16, at 5 p.m. at the HRAC,
located at 217 East Thomas St., photographer Rebecca Meyers will lead attendees through
her show 鈥淭hrough the Mind鈥檚 Eye: An Artist鈥檚 Journey,鈥� currently on display at the
center.
鈥淩ebecca Meyers will discuss her influences and artistic journey using her panoramic
images as reference,鈥� Johnson said. 鈥淎s she traveled 80 miles to work via train, she
passed a vast industrial landscape, forming a large image in her mind, which she has
now brought to life to share with others.鈥�

Academics, camps, activities featured at 麻豆传媒映画出品's Rock 鈥榥 Roar Feb. 18
More than 3,400 students from 85 different high schools will converge on 麻豆传媒映画出品
Louisiana University Saturday, Feb. 18, for the Southeast Louisiana District Literary
Rally and Rock 鈥榥 Roar, the university鈥檚 annual campus-community festival.
Scheduled for 8 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., Rock 鈥榥 Roar, now in its 21st year, will follow
its predecessors鈥� successful track record of providing a day of family fun for both
the Literary Rally visitors and the community, said 麻豆传媒映画出品 Interim Alumni Association
Director Julie Perise.
鈥淩ock 鈥榥 Roar is a day-long event with something for everyone, and a great way
to get the community, campus and area high school students together to have fun while
visiting and learning about 麻豆传媒映画出品,鈥� said Perise.
Rock 鈥榥 Roar will entertain public and private high school students from East
Baton Rouge, East Feliciana, Iberville, Jefferson, Livingston, Orleans, St. Charles,
St. Helena, St. John the Baptist, St. Tammany, Tangipahoa, Washington and West Feliciana
parishes.
At the Literary Rally, students will compete in 46 different academic subjects.
When they finish their tests, students can gather information from hands-on academic
displays, financial aid and career booths, and enjoy refreshments from the wide variety
of food booths sponsored by student organizations.
Festival goers can purchase a variety of snacks including pastalaya, hamburgers,
hot dogs and pizza, vegan chili, jambalaya, curly fries, nachos, cheese cake bites,
cake pops, chocolate covered fruit, snow cones, chocolate covered pretzels, various
other baked and fried goods.
Families will find a multitude of children鈥檚 activities, including face painting,
an interactive football throw with members of the Lion football team, a rock climbing
wall, jousting arena and slide. KSLU 90.9 FM radio will be on hand with music and
a DJ.
Rock 鈥榥 Roar will again sponsor its popular camps for local children. The spirit
camp for dance and cheer enthusiasts ages 5-12, hosted by the 麻豆传媒映画出品 Lionettes
and cheerleaders, is scheduled from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Kinesiology and
Health Studies Building. Dance camp fees are $15 and include refreshments. Immediately
following the camp, young dancers will perform in the Kinesiology and Health Studies
Building.
Art education students will offer a hands-on art camp for children ages 6-12
from 9-11 a.m. with registration at 8:30 a.m. The camp, which costs $15, will take
place in Clark Hall.
The baseball camp is set for 8:30-10:30 a.m. at the football practice field behind
the bull pen on campus. Children ages 6-12 are invited to participate and are asked
to bring their baseball glove and bat for a day of fun. Registration is at 8 a.m.,
and the camp fee is $15.
Parents can pick up applications for camps at the Alumni Center, 500 West University

Food personality Poppy Tooker to speak at Sims Memorial Library Tea March 4
Poppy Tooker, food activist and writer, will be the featured speaker at the annual
Friends of Sims Library鈥檚 Marjorie Morrison Memorial Members鈥� Tea on Saturday, March
4, at 2 p.m. at 麻豆传媒映画出品鈥檚 Sims Memorial Library.
Guests will enjoy a variety of teas and a selection of delectable sandwiches
and pastries.
Tooker is the host and executive producer of the weekly NPR radio show Louisiana
Eats! and a regular food personality on WYES-TV鈥檚 weekly Steppin鈥� Out. Her book,
The Crescent City Farmers Market Cookbook, received a Tabasco Cookbook Award and was
named 鈥淐ookbook of the Year鈥� by New Orleans Magazine.
Her other books include Tujague鈥檚 Cookbook: Creole Recipes and Lore in the New
Orleans Grand Tradition; Louisiana Eats!: The People, the Food, and Their Stories;
and Madame Begue鈥檚 Recipes of Old New Orleans Creole Cookery. She was recognized by
the Times-Picayune as a 鈥淗ero of the Storm鈥� for her work reviving New Orleans restaurants
and food providers following Hurricane Katrina.
The International Association of Cooking Professionals recognized Tooker鈥檚 rebuilding
efforts at their annual conference in April 2008, with their first-ever Community
Service Award. For over 25 years, her cooking classes have centered on history and
tradition as well as the food science behind her preparation.
The tea is free to members of the Friends of Sims Library. Non-members may reserve
a seat for $25, which includes a one-year individual membership in FOSL. Unlimited
mimosas will also be available for $10.

麻豆传媒映画出品 students to sponsor farmers markets throughout spring semester
The 麻豆传媒映画出品 student organization Reconnect will sponsor a series of farmers markets
throughout the spring semester, with the first on Feb. 15 in the Student Union breezeway
from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Tentative dates for the others are March 8, March 22 and April 5. Each will feature
locally grown produce, arts and crafts, and fresh prepared foods, such as honey, cheese
and baked goods. Vendors include Covey Rise Farms, Berry Hill Farms, and various independent
artisans.
鈥淲e want to support the local economy by promoting area farmers and artisans,鈥�
said Reconnect President Jessica Bell, a sophomore sociology major. 鈥淔or us, it鈥檚
all about promoting awareness of the importance of buying and eating locally grown
food, rather than food grown thousands of miles away.鈥�
Student vendors are encouraged to participate in the markets by emailing Reconnect

A student environmental club, Reconnect participates in the Real Food Challenge,
a national effort among college students to promote the use of locally grown, healthy
and sustainable food products.

Students鈥� Research, Creative, and Scholarly Activities Showcase Call for Presentations
麻豆传媒映画出品鈥檚 Office of Sponsored Research and Programs invites undergraduate and
graduate students to participate in this showcase of student research, creative, and
scholarly activity on Tuesday, March 14, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Student Union
Grand Ballroom, located on the third floor.
This non-competitive event will display conference posters, publications, and other
visual presentations. All disciplines are welcome.
We envision that the students 鈥� and if feasible, their faculty advisors 鈥� will be
present for an hour or two during the five-hour showcase to discuss their displays
and to advocate for the future participation of 麻豆传媒映画出品 students in research,
creative, and scholarly pursuits.
The application deadline is Monday, March 6.
